How it works

We do the deal. You keep the newsroom.

There is no platform to join and no software to learn. Ping is an agency arrangement: you stay exactly as independent as you are now, and we go and sell something on your behalf that you could not sell alone.

How the arrangement works, in three steps

1

We aggregate

A single title in a single town cannot get a meeting with a national advertiser or a technology platform. A group of independent titles with real combined reach can. We assemble that group so the scale exists without anybody being acquired.

2

We negotiate

We take the terms the big groups get and argue for the same thing on behalf of publishers who are normally quoted something worse, or not quoted at all. That is the entire job, and it is the part most publishers have neither the hours nor the leverage to do.

3

We pay out

Money from a deal is apportioned and paid to the publishers who earned it. Our commission funds the negotiating, the admin and the chasing. Anything beyond that goes back into the work rather than out as profit.

What we do not do

The arrangement

What it costs you

Ping takes a commission on revenue it brings in. If we bring in nothing, we are owed nothing. There is no membership fee, no subscription and no charge for being listed.

That is deliberate. A fee-based model pays us whether or not you earn, and it is how publishers end up funding somebody else's overheads. A commission only pays us when it has already paid you.

The exact rate depends on the deal, because the work involved in an advertising arrangement and a licensing arrangement are not the same. We will tell you the rate before you agree to anything, in writing, in a sentence you can read without a lawyer.

What we need from you

  • That you actually publish, regularly, to a real audience in a real place.
  • That you meet recognised editorial standards. For most publishers that means IPSO's Editors' Code or the Impress Standards Code.
  • Accurate audience figures. Not inflated ones. Every deal we do rests on the numbers being true, and one publisher exaggerating damages the position of all the others.
  • That you are independent, and free of the commercial, political and religious ties that would disqualify you elsewhere in this sector.
